Gladys was the ninth of ten children of William Ebenezer Crole (b1857 in Richmond, Victoria) and Harriet Mary Parke (b1869 in Blackeville, Victoria). William - a Labourer - and Harriet married in 1888 at Lardner, Gippsland, Victoria. The family lived in Warragul, Roorooma, Leongatha, Meeniyan, Dumbalk and Melbourne where William worked as a Labourer and Contractor.

Gladys was working as a Clerk in Melbourne, Victoria when she enlisted in the Australian Army Women's Volunteer Defence Corps (Service No:V144118). Three of Gladys' brothers, three Brothers-in-Law and three Nephews also served.

Gladys remained in Melbourne, Victoria where she worked as a Clerk. She died in 1997.
