Harry was the fifth of six children of John Andrew Craig Hamilton (b1871 in New Zealand) and Herbertina Mary Agnes Smerdon (b1871 in Sulky Gully, Victoria). John - a Labourer - and Herbertina were in Perth, WA in 1898 when their first child was born. They then moved to Jarradale, WA before returning to Miner's Rest, Victoria in 1904. By 1917 John was an Engine Driver in Midland Junction, and the family moved to Perth in the 1920s, where Herbertina was a Shopkeeper.
