Ed was born in Dubbo, New South Wales in 1921, fifth of seven children of Robert (Bob) Aubrey Shumack (b1877 in Bathurst, New South Wales) and Margaret (Maggie) Jane McCulloch (b1888 in Tumut, New South Wales). Bob was a Farmer at Narromine via Castlereagh, and he and Maggie married in 1910 in Tumut. The couple settled at Mogriguy via Castlereagh, where they raised their family and Bob was a Farmer - and served as Secretary of the Farmers and Settlers Association.
