Corporal Ernest Charles Speirs (Service No:V5133) was serving with the ACMF when he was Discharged on 1 March 1944. He had enlisted on 8 August 1940 and was attached to 3 District Ordnance Workshops. He had previously served with the Militia (Sapper; Service No:95525), attached to 44 Field Battery and 59 Infantry Battalion from 20 August 1936 to 30 November 1936. His next enlistment was on 14 October 1939 with 10th Provost Corps (Private: Service No:V81487) - discharged 30 November 1939. He then enlisted again with the ACMF on 18 July 1940, serving with 5th Battalion (Private; Service No:V54468) before transferring to 3 District Ordnance Workshops (Private; Service No:V5133). He was promoted to Corporal on 7 July 1942 and was attached to Vic LoC Workshops when he Discharged on 1 March 1944.
Born in 1899 in Mangalore Victoria, Ernest was the second of three children of James Ernest Speirs (b1869 in Wallan, Victoria) and Mary Jane Robinson (b1870 in Mangalore, Victoria). James (a Labourer) and Mary married in 1892 in Mangalore Victoria and by 1908 had settled in Melbourne where James was a Railways Worker.
Prior to his enlistments, Ernest worked in Melbourne as a Tailor's Presser before a short stint as a Farm Hand in Walhalla, Gippsland, Victoria. In 1936 in Melbourne Victoria, Ernest married Rhoda Emma Pearl Crook (b1899 in Melbourne, Victoria) - Rhoda was a Knitter and Ernest was a tailor's Presser.
After WWII Ernest and Rhoda lived in Shepparton and Langwarry Victoria, where Ernest was a Labourer on the Railways. They returned to Melbourne in the 1960s and Ernest worked as a Labourer. Rhoda died in 1974 and Ernest in 1995.
