Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Private Alfred Chapman Ladhams (Service No:W40374) served in the ACMF with 14th Battalion (WA) VDC from 20 August 1941 to 23 April 1944 (Reserves List).

Alf was born in Albany, Western Australia in 1910, fourth of eight children of John Henry Ladhams (b1882 in Payneham, South Australia) and Violet (Althea) Bevetta Althea Chapman (b1885 in Little Hampton, South Australia). John and Althea married in York in 1905 - John was a Gunner attached to The Forts Albany, and in 1905 he deserted - leaving his clothes on the rocks to give the impression he had drowned - and returned to York where he was arrested and returned to Albany under military escort. (Trove 1905). Althea and their son joined him in Albany, and the family settled in Bridgetown, where John was a Brickmaker. In the 1920s John and Althea moved to Pemberton, where they raised their family and John was a Settler/Dairy Farmer in Northcliffe until his death in 1935.

Alf started work in Northcliffe as a Mill Hand (Timber), and was a Dairy Farmer in Northcliffe when he enlisted in the ACMF in 1942. In the late 1940's/early 1950s Alf worked in the Kojonup District (Dinninup and Muradup) as a Bulldozer Driver, and in the mid 1950s in Collie married Ruth Evelyn Crozier (nee Pitt; b1917 in Perth, Western Australia). Alf and Ruth lived in Collie - where Alf was a Truck Driver - until 1958, when they moved to Perth and Alf worked as a Cleaner. Alf died in 1971 and Ruth in 1995.
