Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Norman Meston was a fitter in civilian life and he served with the 9th Field Company Engineers. He was recommended for a DCM during April 1918 for conspicuous courage in supervising the construction of an important bridge across the Somme River whilst under heavy shell fire. He was awarded the MM. He was again recommended for a DCM on 30 September 1918, for a solo reconnaissance mission through a tunnel which located a German strongpoint. He received no award on this occasion.

Norman’s younger brother 1394 Pte. Harold Victor Meston 9th Battalion AIF, had been killed in a railway accident in France on the 4 April 1916, aged 30.

Another younger brother, 1720 Lce. Cpl. Leslie Gordon Meston 18th Battalion AIF, was also killed in action 19 May 1918, aged 29.

They were the sons of Alexander and Janet Louisa Meston of Lewisham, NSW, though the boys gave their place of association as Woodburn, which is still a small town, on the banks of the Richmond River, in far northern NSW.
