George was the youngest of seven children of Arthur Charles Fickling (b1867 in Patrick's Plains, NSW) and Elizabeth Julia Ann Rose (b1879 in Moree, NSW). Arthur (a Teamster) and Elizabeth married in 1896 in Goondiwindi, QLD and by 1897 had moved to WA where they settled in the Murchison Region - Pinjarra, Dongarra and Minegenew. The family was living on Nangetty station at Mingenew, WA where Arthur was a Teamster in 1910 when Arthur was killed in a shooting accident. Elizabeth settled in Mingenew and in 1917 remarried and had another two children.
George worked as a Labourer in Mingenew, and in 1936 married Norma Ann Pettit (b1911 in Dongara, WA). The couple settled in Mingenew where George worked as a Labourer and Norma was a Fruiterer. George enlisted in the ACMF in June 1942 (Service No:W20575). He was a Member of the Mingenew Cricket Club and Agricultural Society. In 1949 he was President of the Mingenew P&C and in 1952 was appointed JP for the Geraldton Magisterial District. George was also a Member of Three Springs Miniature Rifle Club. Norma died in 1982 and George in 1986.
