Biography contributed by Hannah Naismith

Richard Ellery and Louisa Fanny Ellery welcomed Lancelot into the world on the 30th of August, 1895. Lancelot grew up on his family's farm at Commoroo, South Australia, along with two sisters, Caroline and Annie, and his four brothers,  Edward, Mark, Fred and George. Lancelot was known as Lance and would rarely be called Lancelot. He and all his siblings, other than Fred, attended school at Morchard. After he finished school, he continued working on the farm. He had the complexion of brown eyes, dark hair, the height of five feet, seven inches with a healthy body mass. Lance and Edward enlisted for war as single men on the 18th of February, 1916.

Lance embarked on the 25th of March, 1916, on HMAT A9 Shropshire. He stayed a private throughout the whole war. Unfortunately, he spent plenty of time in the hospital. For example, on the 2nd of July, 1916, he went to the hospital for laryngitis. He returned to his 27th Battalion until the 26th of April, 1917, when he unexpectedly became ill with scabies.

His first big battle was on the 6th of June, 1918, at 9pm, where he was injured but remained on duty at the Trenches, Left B, Chapelle de D'Armentières. It was said in the battalion war diary that there was ‘Heavy shell by our artillery and attempted raid by 26th and 28th battalion’. It caused some retaliation by the enemy and some damage to our front trenches. His injury is yet unknown.

Unfortunately, while Lance and Edward were away at war, their father, Richard, passed away.  Lance married Dorothy Fox and had two sons; Stanley and Ronald Ellery. Sadly, Stanley passed away at fifteen years of age, in 1940. Ronald went overseas, and Dorothy started a hairdressing business in Orroroo.

Lance passed away on the 25th of August, 1945, at the age of forty nine. He was buried at the Orroroo Cemetery along with his parents, Louisa and Richard, and his son Stanley.
