Norman Brierley, a farmer of Brisbane, Queensland was born in Annandale, New South Wales on 3rd of April 1897. He enlisted in Brisbane December 15th, 1917 aged 21 and embarked from Sydney on board RMS Ormonde, 2nd of March 1918. He served as a private with the 31st Battalion in France. After the armistice he travelled throughout France as batman to Lieutenant Hix. He was discharged on 13th September 1919 in Port Melbourne.

Letters to his brother Herbert and sister-in-law Jess, describe a voyage to Egypt on the Ormonde, and from Egypt to Marseilles on the Indarra May 1918, torpedoing of the Leicester Castle, training at Codford camp, trench warfare in France Sep. - Nov. 1918, travels in France as batman to Lieutenant Hix and return to Australia on H.M.A.S. Port Melbourne Aug. 1919.*

He enlisted again on 16th of January, 1941 at age 44 as Corporal in World War 2 and on 24th of July, 1941 as Lance Sergeant. 

Norman Brierley married Ruby McRae on 26th November 1921 and had four children: Ronald Joseph, Betty Theresa, Patricia and Margaret. Ronald served in WW2 in the 2nd/17th Infantry Battalion.
