Ernest (Service No:T16516) was Headmaster in Roseberry on 4 September 1942 when he signed his Mobilistation Attestation Form, which states 'No Record of Service'. He had previously served as a Cadet in in the RANR in 1922.
Ernest was born in Beaconsfield, Tasmania in 1907, eldest of two children of Alfred (Ern) Ernest Crawford (b1884 in Launceston, Tasmania) and first wife Louisa Elizabeth Mercer (b1899 in LaTrobe, Tasmania). Ern was a Tram Conductor in 1906 when he and Louisa married in Beaconsfiled, where they lived before moving to Launceston. Ern served in WWI (Private; Service No:2050) and while he was overseas, Louisa moved to Melbourne, Victoria with their two sons. Following his Discharge, Ern and Louisa divorced in 1921 and Ern settled in Launceston with the two boys. In 1921 he was a Motorman when he married Ida Mary Lyndon (b1894 in Oatlands, Tasmania) - Ida worked in Wilmot as a Draper's Assistant. Ern and Ida settled in Launceston, where Ern died in 1964 and Ida in 1984.
Ernest was a Teacher (as was his younger brother Horace) in Launceston when, in 1936 in St Marys, he married Kathleen Muriel Salter (b1909 in St Marys, Tasmania). Ernest and Kathleen lived in Launceston, Zeehan, St Leonard's and Hobart where Ernest was a Teacher and Headmaster. Ernest died in 1971 and Kathleen in 2005.
