The 29th name inscribed is Private William Murnane.

On the 4th January 1943, Private William Murnane, 35th Battalion (Reg No-1184), labourer from Main Street, Minmi, New South Wales, was laid to rest at the Sydney War Cemetery, Rookwood, N.S.W, Plot A Row D Grave 10, age 57 years 2 months.

Will had died of illness on the 2nd January 1943 at the 113th Australian General Hospital, Concord, N.S.W.

Born at West Maitland, New South Wales on the 15th October 1885 to Patrick James, died 23.9.1915, Main Street, Minmi, N.S.W., age 87, buried at Sandgate Cemetery, N.S.W., CATHOLIC 1-08. 21, no photo of gravesite, marked?, and Mary Bridget Murnane nee Maguire, died 10.5.1917, Main Street, Minmi, N.S.W., age 75, mother of 5 sons, 2 daughters, sleeping at Sandgate Cemetery, N.S.W., CATHOLIC 1-08. 21, no photo of gravesite, marked?, from West Maitland, N.S.W. (1916).

Will enlisted on the 11th December 1915, age 29 years 2 months, at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A24 Benalla on the 1st May 1916.

Disembarked Plymouth, England 9.7.1916.

Proceeded O/Seas to France from Southampton, England 21.11.1916.

Wounded in action - 30.5.1917 (remained on duty).

Admitted to hospital 3.8.1917 (trench fever).
Granted furlough in England from 15.10.1917 to 29.10.1917.

Commenced return to Australia 21.12.1917.

Will arrived home on the 12th February 1918, being discharged on the 20th March 1918.

Also served 2nd A.I.F., enlisted 7.11.1940, Shortland Camp, N.S.W., Service No-N67984, Private, 2nd Garrison Battalion, admitted to hospital 12.12.1942, seriously ill (myeloma).

I would like to see poppies placed at Will’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
