Son of Alfred Miles Upton and Sarah Upton nee Hughes of Footscray, Victoria.
During 1910c Ernest married Eleanor Mildred Wells in Victoria. Following their divorce Ernest married Ethel Elizabeth Eileen in 1924c.
Next of kin later changed to his sister Sarah Upton of Waratah Street, Ascot Vale, Victoria
11 March 1916 - enlisted at Melbourne with the 57th Battalion and with the rank of Private these papers were originally lost. A second Attestation paper had him enlisted on 23 March 1916 with the 3rd Pioneer Battalion and a sifferent service number. Record reverted to original enlistment date, battalion and number.
10 November 1916 - transferred to the 58th Battalion
12 August 1918 - wounded in action by an aerial bomb, while being an absentee. Wound to the right forearm. Invalided to England on 18 August 1918
7 July 1919 - commenced return to Australia aboard HT Chemnitz disembarking 5 September 1919
