Military Medal citation

During operations near ZOENEBEKE east of YPRES from 30th Sept. to 10 Oct. 1917, Pte. VALE on many occasions carried urgent messages to and from the front line. This was done over the most difficult of ground. On one occasion when all communications were out and the enemy's shelling was very heavy, Pte. VALE volunteered and was successful in getting situation reports from the front line to Battalion Headquarters thus enabling reports to be sent to Brigade Headquarters. Pte. VALE'S willingness and ability in taking messages was admired by all who witnessed his work.

Biography contributed by St Ignatius' College

Albert Vale was born in London, England, and later moved to Surrey, where he spent his childhood. Eventually, he migrated to Adelaide, Australia. Before enlisting in the army, Albert worked as a labourer, a physically demanding job that likely involved farm work. He had no prior military service before World War I. Little is known about his family, except that his mother, Mary Vale, was listed as his next of kin. Albert was not married at the time of his enlistment, which occurred on July 28, 1915, when he was 23 years old.

On July 28th, Albert enlisted in the army at Keswick, South Australia. He boarded the HMAT Benalla (A24) on October 27th, 1915. At first, he was placed in the 27th Battalion, training in Melbourne, but after a few months, he was transferred to the 10th Battalion. This unit trained in Mena camp, Cairo, Egypt, before heading to Europe to fight. Albert served as a private on the Western Front for the rest of the war, remaining in that position throughout his time in the army.
