Private Angus Archibald McDonald (Service Nos:3565/2463A) initially enlisted in the AIF in Melbourne on 13 July 1915 with 10th Depot Battalion, and was attached to 6/27th Battalion on 27 October 1915 when he embarked with his Unit from Adelaide on board HMAT A24 Benalla. Private McDonald failed to re-embark at Fremantle and was sent to Blackboy Hill, Discharging on 27 May 1916 ('not likely to become an efficient soldier': NAA). Private McDonald was in Adelaide on 12 July 1916 when he re enlisted in the AIF, and was attached to 5/48th Infantry Battalion on 28 August 1916 when he embarked with his Unit from Adelaide for Plymouth on board HMAT A69 Anchises. Private McDonald was KiA at Albert in France on 28 March 1918 - according to CSM Whittle 3774 (SA Red Cross Information Bureau) 'On this day I saw McDonald killed instantly, being enfiladed by MG fire in a ditch alongside the railway line between Albert and Dernancourt, where we were holding the line'. A small parcel of Private McDonald's effects was returned to his wife on the Baroona, whilst the majority were 'included in the consignment lost at sea with the ill-fated Barunga' (NAA 1919).
Angus was born in Davington, Port Adelaide, South Australia in 1896, the second of three children (and only son) of Archibald J McDonald (b1845 in Middlesex, London) and Elizabeth (Lily) Hannah Lillie Frost (b1869 in Nottinghamshire, England). Archibald and Lily married in 1888 in Adelaide, and settled in Port Adelaide where they raised their family. Archibald died in 1902 and Lily remarried to John Nelson in 1903.
Angus attended Glanville Primary School and in 1912 the Magill Boys' Reformatory (following a brush with the Law). Angus served in the Cadets and Militia, and was a Horse Driver in Port Adelaide in 1914. He enlisted in the AIF in Melbourne in 1915, and re- enlisted in Adelaide in July 1916. In April 1916 in Brampton in Adelaide, Angus married Madeline Pridmore (b1899 in Adelaide, South Australia). Following Angus' death in 1918, Madeline remarried in 1920. Angus' older sister Euphemia gave her son the second name 'Dernancourt' in 1921.
