With his two older brothers (Claude and Wilfred) Corporal Charles Henry Miller MM (Service No:964) served in WWI. Corporal Miller had served four years in the Cadets and Militia prior to enlisting as a Private in the AIF on 28 February 1915. Private Miller was attached to 17th Infantry Battalion on 12 May 1915 when he embarked with his Unit from Sydney for Gallipoli on board HMAT A32 Themistocles. Private Miller was awarded the Military Medal 'For good work at Gallipoli, especially in the evacuation when he had charge of the last party of bombers on Courtney's Post, also for splendid work since arrival in France' (Commonwealth Gazette No 62; 19 April 1917). The Daily Telegraph reported on his Award, describing him as 'a bomb thrower at Gallipoli. A brother, Wilfred, is now in the firing line' (Daily Telegraph; Wed 16 May 1917; p9). On 17 March 1916 Private Miller embarked from Alexandria for Marseilles, and was promoted to Corporal on 1 June 1916. WiA in France (GSW arm and leg) on 27 June 1916, Corporal Miller was evacuated to England, and on 3 August 1916 embarked from Southampton for Sydney on board NZHS Marama. Corporal Miller was attached to 17th Infantry Battalion at Discharge (Medically Unfit) on 26 March 1917. In WWII, he enlisted as a Private (Service No:N350296), serving with 8 Battalion VDC and Corps HQ from 24 April 1942 to 5 January 1944.
Charles was born in Ashburnham, NSW in 1895, youngest of eleven children of Charles Augustus Miller (nee Muller; b1844 in Weisbaden, Germany) and Sarah Ann Giffin (b1854 in Bathurst, NSW). Charles Snr arrived in Sydney NSW in 1857 on board the Helvezia, and was a Farmer/Grazier in 1880 when he and Sarah married in Molong. They settled at Manildra via Molong where they raised their family and Charles Snr was a Farmer/Grazier until his death in 1895. Sarah was killed, with son Wilfred, in 1923 in Parkes when the car they were in was hit by a train on a level crossing.
Charles was working in Manildra as a Clerk in 1915 when he enlisted in the AIF, and following his Discharge, returned to Manildra where he was a Farmer. In 1925 in Peak Hill, Charles married Gloria May Mary Doyle (b1907 in Glen Innes, NSW). Charles and Gloria lived in Peak Hill, where Charles was a Farmer and Hotelkeeper (Carrington Hotel). In the early 1960s Charles and Gladys moved to Werris Creek Station via Quirinda, where Charles was Station Manager. Gladys died in 1969 and Charles in 1988.
