A Remarkable School Teacher and Soldier of The Great War resting peacefully at Sandgate Cemetery.

83 years ago today, on the Wednesday afternoon of the 30th March 1938, 2nd Lieutenant John Dyet, 35th Battalion (Reg No-1943A), school teacher from Berner Street, Merewether, New South Wales and 45 View Street, Cessnock, N.S.W., father of three, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 57. PRESBYTERIAN-24NW. 29.

Born at Barnhill, Blantyre, Scotland about 1880 to John and Jane Aitken Dyet; husband of Sarah Jane Dyet nee Postlethwaite (married 1905, Merewether, N.S.W., died 1944, Rockdale?), John enlisted December 1915 at Rutherford, N.S.W.

Admitted to hospital 18.2.1917 (not stated), 21.11.1917 (not stated), 22.1.1918 (rheumatism and myalgia), John returned home to Merewether on the 6th July 1918, being discharged medically unfit (rheumatism) on the 12th November 1918.

Mr Dyet’s name has been inscribed on the Merewether (Mitchell Park) Memorial Gates, Merewether School of Arts Roll of Honour (photos, unveiled on the 15th December 1917, 22 names now inscribed), Merewether Public School Roll of Honour, N.S.W. Public School Teachers who Served Abroad World War 1 Honour Roll, Newcastle South Public School Roll of Honour, East Maitland Boys' High School Roll of Honour, Gloucester Memorial Clock Tower, Gloucester Soldiers' Club Honour Roll and the Gloucester Shire First War Roll of Honor.

There is no indication inscribed on John’s headstone of his service with the 1st A.I.F., so I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label in remembrance of his sacrifice for God, King and Country.

Service record states Died after Discharge - 28.3.1938.
