Neita Florence Tanner was born in Sydney, Australia to Albert Rees Tanner and Ivy Florence Nolan. Neita attended Monte Sant' Angelo Mercy College in Sydney. Neita met her husband Edward Francis Wiese, U.S. Marine Corps, Ist Marine Division, in Sydney in 1941 at a Catholic USO dance during the USS Portland's goodwill tour of Australia. During World War II, she served in the Australian Women's Army Corps. After the war, she traveled from Sydney to San Francisco aboard the "bride ship" USS Marie Falcon, then flew to Oahu, Hawaii, where she and Ed were married in 1946.
They lived in many places, including California, Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Puerto Rico and Panama. Neita learned batik while living in Panama and is known for her work on Cuna Indians and the cultural icons and flowers of Panama.
