Served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery, not forgotten.

75 years ago today, on the Wednesday afternoon of the 23rd July 1947, Private John Arthur Parsons, 54th Battalion (Reg No-2710), store assistant from Quambone, New South Wales and 13 Corlette Street, Cooks Hill, N.S.W. and 3 Auckland Street, Newcastle, N.S.W. and 19 Railway Street, Wickham, N.S.W. (1927) and 5 Beaumont Street, Hamilton, N.S.W., father of four, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 67. ANGLICAN 3-174. 24.

Note - The AIF Project has incorrect information regarding date of death, age & place of burial.

Born at Ashbourne, Derbyshire, England (22.8.1880? or 22.8.1883? - place and date unconfirmed) to George Phillip and Emily Parsons; husband of Elinor Maud Parsons nee Ryan (married Coonable, N.S.W.? died 1966, sleeping at Rookwood Cemetery, N.S.W.), John enlisted April 1916 at Dubbo, N.S.W.

Admitted to hospital 2.4.1917 (diarrhea), 23.4.1917 (bronchitis), 8.10.1917 (septic knee), 22.6.1918 (influenza).

John was invalided home February 1919, being discharged medically unfit (chronic rheumatism) on the 21st March 1919.

I have not located Mr. Parson’s name inscribed on any known War Memorial or Roll of Honour.

I have placed poppies at John’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Service record states Died after Discharge, 22/7/1947.

Plaque had been installed in the New South Wales Garden of Remembrance.
