Private Betty Joan Anderson (Vf516390) served in the Australian Women's Army Service (AWAS) from 7 October 1944 to 16 August 1946. Private Anderson enlisted at 3 AWAS Reception Depot Melbourne - graded as Canteen Attendant - and served with 10 Australian Army Canteen Service (AACS) Club.
Betty was born in Beaufort, Victoria in 1926, fifth of seven children of William James Anderson Snr (b1892 in Beaufort, Victoria) and Emily Lyons (b1893 in Waterloo via Beaufort, Victoria). William worked as an Attendant in a Hospital for the Insane and as a Labourer, served in WWI (Private; Service No:304) and was a Farmer in 1920 when he and Emily married in Beaufort. William and Emily lived in Beaufort, Trawalla and Brewster where they raised their family and William was a Farmer. William served in WWII, as did sons William Jnr, Richard, Snow and daughter Betty.
Betty was engaged with 'Home Duties' in Trewalla before enlisting in the Army. Following her Discharge, she worked in Melbourne and Bendigo as a Telephonist with the Postmaster Generals Department. By the early 1960s Betty was living with younger sister Bonnie in Ballarat, where she worked as a Nurse until retirement in the 1990s. Betty died in 2001.
