Heath was the fourth of seven children of Angus McLeod (b1876 in Warwick QLD) and Mabel Victoria Collins (nee Bryans; b1879 in London England). Angus (a Labourer) and Mabel (a Widow) married in 1910 in Greenough WA. Angus had arrived in WA in the mid 1890s, and Mabel in 1907 in Fremantle WA on board the Oruba. Angus and Mabel lived in Greenough and Mt Magnet where Angus was a Labourer, before settling in Bockara - a small settlement on the Geraldton-Dongara railway line - where Angus was a Share Farmer. Angus and Mabel retired to Perth WA in the 1950s.

Heath was working as a Truck Driver in Mt Magnet WA in August 1941 when he enlisted in the ACMF (Private; Service No:W20127) and was attached to 20 Defence and Employment Platoon when he Discharged in July 1942 to enlist in the AIF. Heath was a Private (Service No:WX32783) attached to General Details Depot when he Discharged in October 1944. Brothers Malcolm (Service No:WX2484) and Ian (Service Nos:W42840/436558) also served in WWII.

In 1943 in Perth WA, Heath married Stella (Peggy) Maria Cecilia Timms (nee Wadeisha; b 1915 in Boulder WA). Following Heath's Discharge, the couple settled in Perth WA where Heath worked as a Tram and Bus Driver. Peggy died in 1995 and Heath in 2004.
