Signalman John Michael McGrath (Service No:VX113830) initially served in the ACMF with 3 Corps of Signals (Service No:V150276) from 3 December 1941 to 2 October 1942, and was 'in the field' at Bindoon WA on 3 October 1942 when he enlisted in the AIF. Signalman McGrath served with Corps of Signals in Morotai (2 June 1945 - 27 September 1945) and was attached to Corps of Signals at Discharge on 18 September 1946.
Born in Axedale, Bendigo, Victoria in 1922, John was sixth of eight children of Matthew McGrath (b1881 in Kombolton via Bendigo, Victoria) and Mary Martha Tranter (b1886 in Heathcote nr Bendigo, Victoria). Matthew was a Farmer in Kombolton in 1909 when he and Mary married in Bendigo. They settled in Kombolton where they raised their family and Matthew was a Farmer and Contractor with local Shires. Following Matthew's death in 1933 Mary moved to Melbourne.
John worked as a Labourer and Mineral Grinder in Melbourne before enlisting in the Army - according to Electoral Rolls he was still in the Army in 1949. In Melbourne in 1956 he married June Margaret Towns and they moved to Western Australia where John was Hotel Manager in Toodyay and June was Housekeeper. In the 1960s John and June lived in Perth and Bruce Rock where John was Bar Maanager and Club Manager before returning to Victoria in the early 1970s where John worked as Bar Manager in Warragul. John died in 2007.
