Bombardier/Corporal Joan Lilian Parks (Service No:VF388669) enlisted in the AWAS on 3 July 1942 - graded Stenographer - and was attached to LHQ (BRA Staff) at Discharge on 29 November 1945. Brothers John and Raymond served in the RAAF, and husband Archibald Sherman served in the AIF (PoW).

Joan was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1919, youngest of four children of John (Jack) McFarlane Parks (b1890 in Horsham, Victoria) and Emily Ruby Sallery (b1891 in Melbourne, Victoria). Jack (a Hairdresser) and Emily married in 1910 in Melbourne, where they settled and raised their family and Jack was a Hairdresser.

Joan worked as a Stenographer in Melbourne before enlisting in the AWAS. In 1946 in Melbourne, Joan married Archibald (Archie) Sherman (b1910 in Melbourne, Victoria) - Archie served in the AIF (Lance Corporal; Service No:VX12576) and was a PoW. Joan and Archie lived at Willaura via Mortlake, Corngamite, Victoria and Cardonald, where they raised their famiily and Archie was a Farmer and Grazier. Archie died in 1968 and Joan in 2020.
