Private Alfred Charles Brown (Service No:13263) served in the Militia for two years from 1913 as a Sergeant attached to 48th (Kooyong) Infantry Regiment, enlisting in the AIF on 13 July 1915. Private Brown was attached to Army Medical Corps, Special Reinforcements when he embarked on 7 March 1916 with his Unit from Melbourne for Marseiles (via Egypt) on board HMAT A63 Karoola. Private Brown served on the Western front and was invalided to England on 13 March 1918 for hospitalisation with Influenza. On 18 July 1918, Private Brown embarked from England for Melbourne on board HT Rugia - as Nursing Staff - and was attached to 13th Field Artillery Brigade at Discharge on 29 December 1919.

Alfred was born in Stratford, Victoria in 1895, second of seven children of Charles Brown (b1867 in Ararat, Victoria) and Elizabeth Mary Mildenhall (b1864 in Tullamarine, Victoria). Charles (a Labourer) and Elizabeth married in 1880 in Sale, Victoria and settled in Stratford where they raised their family and Charles was a Labourer.

Alfred worked as a Bootmaker in Stratford before enlisting in the AIF and, following his Discharge, settled in Traralgon, where he worked as a Bootmaker. Alfred died in 1972.
