Corporal Alfred Richard Andrews (Service No:76737) enlisted in the RAAF as an Aircraftman I on 16 July 1942 with RAAF HQ Maryboorough. In his enlistment interview (National Archives Australia) he was described as 'Alert, genuine type of manual worker .... no apparent faults .... respectful, well and powerfully built' and 'A very good type'. On 16 January 1943 he was promoted to Leading Aircraftman attached to Works Training Unit. He was posted later that month to No 7 Mobile Works Squadron Royal Park. Promoted to Corporal on 1 June 1945, Corporal Andrews was attached to Base Torpedo Unit at Discharge on 5 December 1945. In his application for Discharge, Corporal Andrews wrote 'I was posted from the Islands on compassionate grounds after serving 18 months in the tropics' (National Archives Australia).

Born in 1907 in Sapphire Town nr Townsville QLD, Alfred was the eldest of seven children of Alfred John Andrews (b1884 in Launceston, Tasmania) and Eliza Gregory (nee Boreau; b1889 in Alpha, QLD). Alfred Snr (a Miner) and Eliza married in 1907 in Sapphire Town, QLD. Alfred Snr started working for QGR in 1910 and was a Ganger in Blair Athol and Canoona, and a Lengthsman at Harvey's Siding nr Rockhampton.

Alfred worked as a Miner at Sapphire Town for two years  before working as a Labourer at Harvey's Siding. In 1930 he married Edna May Genrich (b1912 in Gayndah, QLD). Alfred and Edna settled in Gympie QLD where Alfred was a Truck Driver for the Widgee Shire Council. Edna died in 1940 and in 1942 Alfred was a Widower with six children under sixteen years of age when he enlisted in the RAAF. Following his Discharge. Alfred returned to Gympie and worked as a Truck Driver for Widgee Shire Council and by 1958 was a Cost Clerk. Alfred died in 1967.
