Corporal Lawrence Byrne (Service No:18826) enlisted at No 1 Recruiting Centre Melbourne as an Aircraftman I on 27 September 1940 (having made a number of applications since 1937) - mustered as Trainee Technical and re mustered as Fitter. Promoted to Leading Aircraftman on 1 November 1941 at SHQ Laverton, and then to Corporal on 1 October 1942 at 2 Operational Training Unit (OTU) Mildura, Corporal Byrne served with 2 Squadron and 57 Operational Base Unit (OBU). Corporal Byrne was attached to RAAF Central Flying School at Discharge on 5 December 1945. Older siblings Frank and Thomas served in WWI, and younger sibling Jock served in the RAAF in WWII.

Larry was born in Steiglitz, Victoria in 1903, sixth of seven children of Thomas Byrne (b1862 at Long Gully via Steiglitz, Victoria) and Susan Anastasia Byrne (b1871 in Meredith, Victoria). Thomas (a Labourer) and Susan married in 1892 in Steiglitz, where they settled and raised their family and Thomas was a Labourer.

Larry worked at Mt Wallace via Ballan, Victoria - initially as a Farm Labourer, and then Motor Mechanic. He was a Member of the Geelong Cricket Club, and a Flying Member of the Australian Aero Club. Following his Discharge, Larry worked in Ballan as a Motor Mechcnic, and by 1949 had settled in Melbourne where he worked as an Engineer. Larry died in 1965.
