David Norman Hedley DOWNIE was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1888
His parents were Thomas DOWNIE and Rachel HORNE
He married Mary Eliza RIPPON in 1914 in Victoria
He had previous service in the Glasgow High School Cadets which were attached to the Scottish Rifles before he enlisted in Brighton, Tasmania on 26th August, 1914 and embarked with the 4th section of the 3rd Field Company Engineers on the 22nd September, 1914 from Melbourne on the ship Geelong
David died of wounds received in action (compound fracture of his skull) due to a bomb, on 31st May, 1915 at Gallipoli and is buried in Beach Cemetery.
His name is memorialised on the Australian War Memorial and he was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal & the Victory Medal
His brother Alexander DOWNIE who had also come to Australia died in Warnambool in Victoria in 1915
