Arthur was the youngest of four children of Joseph Stokes (b1855 in Staffordshire, England) and second wife Edith Hannah Yewdale (b1875 in Northumberland, England). Joseph (a Brick Maker) and Edith (who had immigrated in 1889 with her parents and siblings, arriving in Albany in January 1889 on board the Orizuba) married in 1896 in Albany WA where they settled and raised their family. Joseph worked as a Brick Maker.

Arthur worked as a Brick Maker in Albany WA and in 1937 married Edith May Dyson (b1915 in Broome WA) in Albany WA. Arthur enlisted in the Australian Army in December 1941 (Private; Service No:W44934) and was attached to 25 Reconnaissance Battalion in 1942 when he transferred (Private; Service No:WX28115). He served with 25th Cavalry Battalion as Batman to Captain McIntyre and was attached to Bulk Issue Petrol and Oil Depot (BIPOD) when he was Discharged in January 1945. 

Following his Discharge, Arthur returned to Albany where he and Edith settled and raised their family and Arthur worked as a Brick Maker. Arthur died in 1976 and Edith in 1984.
