Died on this date – 21st February…… Private Albert Ernest Barr was born on 19th March, 1883 in Sydney, New South Wales. He married Alice Maud McCarthy in Sydney, NSW on 22nd August, 1903. They had 6 children but their second child died when she was just under 12 months old.
On 16th April, 1917 Albert Ernest Barr enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) as a 34 year old, married, Storeman from 53 Lewis Street, Redfern, Sydney, NSW.
Private Albert Ernest Barr, Service Number 7457, embarked from Sydney, NSW on HMAT Marathon (A74) on 10th May, 1917 with the 1st Infantry Battalion, 25th Reinforcements & disembarked at Devonport, England on 20th July, 1917.
He was marched in to 1st Training Battalion at Durrington, Wiltshire from Australia on 20th July, 1917.
On 23rd April, 1918 Private Barr proceeded overseas to France via Folkestone from No. 4 Camp, Sutton Veny, Wiltshire. He was marched in to NZ Infantry & General Base Depot at Etaples, France on 24th April, 1918. Private Barr proceeded to join his Unit on 25th April, 1918 from NZ Infantry & General Base Depot & was taken on strength of 1st Battalion in France on 30th April, 1918.
He reported sick on 27th August, 1918. He was admitted to 1st Australian Field Ambulance on 27th August, 1918 – cause N.Y.D. (not yet determined) – pains in all joints. Private Barr was transferred & admitted to 61st Casualty Clearing Station on 27th August, 1918 then transferred to Ambulance Train 11 with P.U.O. (Pyrexia (fever) of unknown origin). He was admitted to 1st US General Hospital at Etretat on 28th August, 1918 with Influenza.
Private Barr was transferred to Australian Convalescent Depot at Havre on 5th September, 1918. He was discharged to Base Depot on 19th September, 1918. Private Barr proceeded from A.I.B.D. (Australian Infantry Base Depot) at Havre on 22nd September, 1918 & rejoined 1st Battalion in France on 24th September, 1918.
Private Albert Ernest Barr proceeded on Leave to UK from 12th February, 1919. He was on Leave from France from 13th February, 1919 to 27th February, 1919.
He was admitted to 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, Kent, England on 17th February, 1919 with Influenza. (The Hospital Admissions form recorded he had Broncho Pneumonia.) Private Barr was reported to be dangerously ill on 20th February, 1919.
Private Albert Ernest Barr died at 15.40 hrs on 21st February, 1919 at 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, Kent, England from Influenza.
He was buried in Brookwood Military Cemetery, Surrey, England (Australian Military Burial Ground) where around 360 other WW1 Australian War Graves are located.
