Leading Aircraftman Ryder Britton Shelley (Service No:408460) served in the RAAF from 19 June 1942 to 5 February 1946. LAC Shelley was attached to Central Flying School at Discharge.
Born in 1922 in Winnaleah Tasmania, Ryder was the fourth of seven children of John Prince Shelley (b1893 in Moorina, Tasmania) and Mary Burke (b1897 in Turner's Marsh, Tasmania). John (a Labourer) and Mary married in 1915 in Launceston, Tasmania - John was the son of an Anglican Minister and Mary was a Catholic. Mary's strict and devout Catholic family refused to speak with her for many years after her marriage. John and Mary lived in Waratah, Ringarooma, Winnaleah, Launceston and Scottsdale where they raised their family and John worked as a Labourer.
Ryder worked as a Clerk and in 1946 in Launceston married June Pretoria Oakley (b1926 in Waratah, Tasmania). Ryder and June had separated by 1949 and Ryder was living in Evandale where he worked as a Clerk. The couple Divorced in 1952 and Ryder was living in Melbourne, Victoria and working as a Clerk when he embarked for London in 1953 on board the Orcades. Ryder remarried to Olive. Ryder died in 1994 in Worcestershire, England.
