Private William Henry Atkison served in the 10th Infantry Battalion, in World War 1.

William Henry Atkinson was born in Koolunga, South Australia on the 14th of August, 1887. Son of James William Atkinson and Annie Nee Ashby, William had two brothers, Robert and Charles Atkinson. 

Growing up as a Methodist, William spent his childhood in Cowell, South Australia. 

Before William’s embarkation, he made a career as a farmer. At the age of 28, William enlisted in Adelaide on the 10th of April 1916. William embarked from Adelaide on the 16th of December, 1916. Williams's unit was the 10th Infantry Battalion ahd he fought on the Western Front.

During his life in the war, William suffered illness and injury that he overcame. He was also arrested on active service for drunkness.  Fortunately, William survived the war and came home to his family. He began his journey back to Australia on 16th June 1919

When William returned home he married Maud Atkinson. At 60, William sadly passed away on the 31st of May 1948. He died at Sefton Park, South Australia. William is buried in the Dudley Park cemetery in South Australia. William is included on the Cowell Men from Franklin Harbour WW1 Roll of Honour memorial in Cowell.
