Corporal Edwin Xavier Smith (Service No:75532) enlisted in the RAAF on 28 April 1942 as an Aircraftman I at 3 Recruiting Centre Brisbane - mustered as Guard, and described as 'Clean appearance, respectful. well set up type. Appears honest worker' (NAA: 1942). ACI Smith served at Operational Base Horn Island and on 1 November 1942 was attached to No 6 Squadron when he was promoted to Leading Aircraftman (LAC). On 1 August 1944 Corporal Smith was in Darwin, NT attached to Security Guards Unit and was Discharged at Sandgate, Brisbane on 3 May 1945 (Security Guards Unit).

Born in 1906 in Ipswich QLD, Ted was the second of three children of James Joseph Smith (b1874 at Pine Mountain, QLD) and Annie Hefferan (b1872 in Ipswich, QLD). James (a Miner) and Annie married in 1900 in Ipswich, QLD where they settled and raised their family and James worked as a Miner.

Ted started work as a Textile Worker in Ipswich, QLD and played brass band instruments. In Ipswich in 1927 he married Minerva Diana Tronson (b1909 in Ipswich, QLD). Ted and Minerva settled at Tivoli in Ipswich where Ted worked as a Council Labourer. The couple had separated by 1942 when Ted enlisted in the RAAF (Ted gave his status as 'Single') and Minerva had moved to the One Mile Estate in Ipswich. Following his Discharge from the RAAF in 1945, Ted returned to Ipwich and work with the City Council as a Labourer. He later lived in Hemmant and Shorncliffe nr Brisbane where he worked as a Labourer until he retired in 1973. In 1975 Ted remarried in Ipswich, QLD to Laura Mary Tapp (nee Collett; b1915 in Ipswich, QLD). Ted and Laura settled in Ipswich where Ted died in 1991 and Laura in 2012.
