Ronald James Foster was born on 15 July 1916 in Drummoyne, New South Wales, Australia to parents Emily May Mann and James Blair Foster (NSW BDM, Registration Number: 26588/1916). In 1941, Ronald married Eileen Johnstone in Ryde, New South Wales (NSW BDM, Registration Number: 25301/1941).

Ronald enlisted as a nursing orderly in the Permanent Air Force (PAF) on 18 June 1940. He later served as a medical orderly in Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). During his service, Ronald was stationed in Japan where he became interested in linguistics. He studied Japanese at the University of Sydney in the hope of becoming a translator.

Ronald passed away in 2004 and was buried in the Fremantle Cemetery located in Western Australia.
