Add my storyBiography contributed by Michael Silver
Daniel Devine was born to Irish imigrant parents Daniel Devine and Mary Ryan at Prior's Pocket, across the river from Goodna in 1875. He attended the Goodna, Redbank, and Moggill State Schools and after leaving school he was engaged in cane cutting and gardening.
From early youth he was a keen follower of sport, especially cricket and rowing, for which he won many trophies. He was a good swimmer and once he rescued a girl from drowning in the Brisbane River by diving from Victoria Bridge.
He enlisted for service in the Great War at the age of forty one and was assigned to the 49th Battalion before being invalided home in late 1917 suffering from rheumatism. Since the war he did not enjoyed good health and about a month before his death he took ill, and was taken to the Ipswich General Hospital, where he passed away.
He did not marry and was survived by four sisters and two brothers. Two younger brothers, 464 Private Stephen Patrick Vincent Devine and 2364 Private Thomas Philip Devine were killed during the war.
