The eldest of two sons, Philip was born in 1912 in Perth WA to Richard Haynes Utting (b1887 in London, England) and Annie Laura Poulson (b1889 in Suffolk, England). Richard (a Porter with WAGR) and Annie (a Domestic Cook) married in 1911 in Perth WA where they settled and Richard worked for the WAGR until his retirement in 1952. Richard served in WWI (Private; Service No:52005) and WWII (Private; Service No: W31612).
Philip started work as a Butcher before enrolling at Claremont Teacher Training College. He was a Teacher in Merredin WA in August 1941 when he enlisted in the RAAF (Leading Aircraftman; Service No: 415287). By 1942 Philip was a Pilot Officer and 1944 a Flight Lieutenant. He qualified as an Air Observer (Astro Nav) and was attached to General Reconnaissance School when he was Discharged in September 1945. Brother Roger served in the RAN in WWII.
In Sydney in 1942 Philip married Muriel Janet Dyke (b1914 in Unley, South Australia). Philip worked as a Teacher in WA schools - he and Muriel lived in Kalgarin nr Kondinan in the Wheatbelt region of WA, at Northam WA (Baker's Hill and Northcliffe) before settling in Lesmurdie in Kalamunda WA. Philip died in 1996 and Muriel in 2001.
