John was born on 8th April, 1890 in Port Adelaide, South Australia under the name John Dustan DALLAS
His parents were John D. DALLAS & Elizabeth JOBSON
S/N 1933 he enlisted 13th January, 1915 with the 10th Battalion
Unit embarked Adelaide on HMAT Hororata 20th April, 1915
He was listed as a Lance Sergeant in the Nominal roll
"OUR HEROES. THE LATE SERGEANT J. D. DALLAS.
The late Sergeant J. D. Dallas, of the 10th Battalion, who was killed in action in France on March 21, was the second dearly beloved son of the late J. D. and Mrs. Dallas, of Berkley street, Cheltenham. He was in his 28th year. He enlisted on January 13, 1915, and left for the front on April 20 the same year. Prior to enlisting he was employed by his father as a wood turner. He was educated at the Port Adelaide Public School, and took an active part in sport. He was secretary of the Port Juniors, and Queenstown Football Clubs, and also occupied the same position in the Queenstown Cricket Club. He was a past president of the Port branch of the A.N.A., and P.C.R. of the Rechabite Lodge, Northern Star Tent. He was also a member of the Port Adelaide Caledonian Society. He was 2 years and 11 months on active service abroad. His bright and happy disposition and natural courtesy endeared him to all who knew him.
