Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

An Original Anzac resting at Sandgate Cemetery, unmarked grave, not forgotten.

I recently placed a cross at the unmarked gravesite of Corporal William Ford, 12th Australian Field Ambulance (cook, Reg No-987), labourer and crane driver from Little Gipps Street, Carrington, New South Wales and 9 Vista Parade, Belmont, N.S.W., who was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery on the Sunday afternoon of the 30th May 1937 (3 funerals on this day), age 41. GENERAL-30. 3.

Born at Sydney, New South Wales on the 14th May 1896 to George and Margaret Ford; husband of Isabella McArthur Ford nee Munro (married 11.10.1918, Marlborough House, Glasgow, Scotland, died?), William enlisted October 1914 with the 4th Australian Field Ambulance at Broadmeadows, Victoria.

Wounded in action - 7.8.1915 (GSW? right hand), and admitted to hospital 14.6.1917 (anthrax), 8.8.1918 (appendicitis, dangerously ill), William returned home January 1919, being discharged medically unfit (invalided) on the 12th March 1919.

Mr. Ford’s name has been inscribed on the Carrington Citizens' Memorial Gates and the Carrington Municipal District Roll of Honor.

The tragic circumstances of William’s death were reported. William Ford, accident victim dies in hospital (hit by car).

I will still submit an application to DVA asking for a Commonwealth War Graves Plaque, curbing and marble chip to honour Mr. Ford’s service with the 1st A.I.F.

38 Returned Veterans of The Great War are resting in unmarked graves in the GENERAL portion of Sandgate Cemetery, research continuing to locate our War Heroes.
Lest We Forget.
