Edgar left Melbourne on 4 August 1917 on board A 32 Themistocles and after training with the 13th Infantry battalion at Codford, England, proceeded to France on 23 January where he transferred to the 50th Battalion. He served the remainder of the war with the 50th then returned to Australia on the City of Exeter on 12 July 1919, disembarking at Adelaide on 22 August and being discharged on 21 September.
