Daughter of Phillip George MAJOR (born MAUGER) and Alma Kathleen FIELDS, Newdegte, Western Australia.
Vera Lowrie (nèe Major) is a Second World War veteran. She is celebrating her 100th birthday.
Vera was born in Subiaco, Perth, but grew up in Newdegate, a small town in the Western Australian wheat belt. Before the war, Vera had worked as a shop assistant and a waitress. She enlisted in the Women’s Auxiliary Australian Air Force (WAAAF) in April 1944, at the age of 18. She completed her initial training at No. 3 WAAAF Training Depot in Karrinyup, Western Australia. After her training, she was posted to the Headquarters of Western Area Command as a mess stewardess.
Vera was discharged from the WAAAF in February and married William Lowrie in 1952. William served in the Australian Army during the war.
The couple went on to have one child, a son, who sadly died at the age of 22. William passed away in 2020. Vera is thankful she has her daughter-in-law Bev, a grandchild and a great grandchild in her life.
In her spare time, Vera enjoyed lawn bowls and horse racing – attending most weekends. She also crocheted rugs for orphans in Africa.
Vera credits her longevity to living a simple, but productive life and being very resilient.
