The Distinguished Service Cross has been awarded to Lieut L. R. Greentree, RANR (S). "for undaunted courage in hazardous operations," according to a message received by Mr Makin, Navy Minister.
Lieut Lloyd Russell Greentree is an fficer who began his sea career in the merchant service. Bom in 1918 in Paddington, Sydney, he joined the AUSN Company at the age of 16 as a cadet, and served in that com pany's vessels for some years. In
July, 1937, he joined the Naval Reserve as a midshipman, and served, for two years in HMAS Canberra.
Shortly after the outbreak of war he was appointed to HMAS Hobart, in which he served oversea. Subse quently he served in a number of RN ships abroad. He returned to Australia in September, 1941, and served in HMAS Australia and
HMAS Westralia. He reached the status of a qualified officer, giving him, as an officer in the reserve, the seniority of his rank in the RAN and the RN.
Lieut Greentree was employed on flying duties, and completed, the observers' course. At the age of 26 he completed 10 years' war service in the Merchant Navy, the Royal Australian Navy, and the Royal Navy, and has served in several theatres of war.
