Youngest of the three brothers (Keith, Adam and William) who served in WWII, Able Seaman William Stanley Forsyth (Service No:S/9182) served in the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) from 4 November 1943 to 6 August 1946. Enlisting as an Ordinary Seaman on board HMAS Cerberus, Able Seaman Forsyth's service included HMAS Rushcutter, Moreton, Penguin and Arunta.
William Jnr was born in Armidale, New South Wales in 1918, youngest of three children of William Stanley Forsyth Snr (b1888 in Cooma, New South Wales) and Edna Alice Lark (b1893 in Sydney, New South Wales). William (an Auditor) and Edna married in 1914 in Sydney, where they lived until 1920 when they moved to Armidale. William Snr was a Chartered Accountant and Local Government Auditor, and served almost four decades in the Australian Army - from 1906 when he enlisted in the Militia as a Gunner with Garrison Artillery. He served in both World Wars - with Garrison Artillery as a Second Lieutenant in WWI (Coast Defences), as Commander (Lieutenant Colonel) of the new 33rd/41st Battalion formed in Armidale, Tamworth, Quirinda and Gunneday, and was attached to the Duke of Wellington's Regiment in the Aldershot Command during travel to England in 1934. In WWII Lieutenant Colonel Forsyth served in the Army from 1940 to 1942. William was involved in his local community - Chairman of Armidale State Electorate ACP, of the Armidale Legacy Contact Group and of the Local Government Auditor's Association of New South Wales, and was President of the Armidale Literary Institute.
William Jnr worked as a Clerk in Armidale before enlisting in the Navy in 1943. Following his Discharge, he returned to Armidale and was working as a Clerk in 1950 when he married Sheila Lorimer Bennett (b1925 in Sydney, New South Wales) - Sheila had worked in Sydney as a Nurse, and in 1949 was a Nurse at the New England Grammar School in Armidale. William and Sheila settled in Armidale, where they raised their family and William worked as a Clerk and an Accountant until his death in 1974. Sheila died in 2002.
