57 years ago today, on the 13th December 1967, Private Alfred Charles Sullivan, 54th Battalion (Reg No-2288), cleaner or loco mechanic from Piper Street, Portland, New South Wales and 123 Bruce Street, Cooks Hill, N.S.W., father of two (Marie, Jean), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 70. ANGLICAN 3-221. 27.

Born at Petersham, New South Wales on the 21st April 1897 to William and Ada A Sullivan of 18 Marion Street, Leichhardt, New South Wales; husband of Ethel Myra Sullivan nee Smith, married 1919, Armidale, N.S.W., died 1975?, as Myra?, Alf enlisted on the 23rd May 1916 at Bathurst, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A42 Boorara on the 19th August 1916.
Admitted to hospital 31.1.1917 (gastric ulcer, mild).

Granted furlough from 4.6.1917 to 19.6.1917.

Commenced return to Australia 27.7.1917.

Alf arrived home on the 24th September 1917, being discharged medically unfit (dilated action of the heart & neurasthenia) on the 30th October 1917.

Mr. Sullivan’s name has been inscribed on the Portland District War Memorial.

I have placed poppies at Alf’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
