Discharged in England but eventually returned to Australia
VETERAN CLERIC STILL ACTIVE
Well known in Tasmania, Rev.W. H. Edwardes will be 85 years of age on Saturday. He was assistant to Archdeacon Hales at Holy Trinity, Launceston, from 1895, and arranged for the laying of the foundation stone of the present church. He was also secretary of the Church Conference held in Launceston. In 1897 he was appointed by Bishop Montgomery, father of Field-Marshdl Viscount Montgomery, to be first rector of Queenstown, in which parish he remained until 1900. He then resigned to go to the Boer war as chaplain to the Tasmanian Military Forces, and afterwards to the Commonwealth Military Forces. Mr. Edwardes served again as a chaplain in the 1914-18 war, where he ministered to men of the A.I.F.and the British Expeditionary Forces.Mr. Edwardes, who is living at 6 Mitchell St., St. Kilda, is at present chaplain to Prince Henry's Hospital, Melbourne, and takes the pulpit when required in various Melbourne suburbs.
