With written permission from his father, James McGlinn, Robert James McGlinn volunteered for the Royal Australian Navy on 16th May 1910 with HMS Challenger as a 2nd Class Boy. 
He was officially enlisted on 1st January 1913 as an Able Seaman. 

He then transferred from the Royal Australian Navy to enlist with the Aukland Mounted Rifles as a Trooper on 1st August 1914.

16th December 1914 he began serving in Dardanelles, Gallipoli where, unfortunately, he was admitted to Medical Treatment on the 28th August 1915 for Ghonnorhea. 

He was discharged from the military on 29th September 1919.
