William Newton was born in Hay NSW and enlisted in Rockhampton Queensland. His mother, Mrs. Catherine Agnes Newton, lived at Dolphin Street, Coogee, New South Wales. His father, Mr. James Newton was a famous resident of Hay NSW, a mayor and politician, and had passed away there in 1913.
William was killed in action at Fromelles and his remains were lost on the battlefield. His mother received his personal effects and medals.
His brother, 2485 Dvr. Charles Newton 3rd Battalion AIF died of wounds on the 22 August 1918, aged 26.
Another brother and sister also served; 4611 Pte. George Newton returned to Australia due to multiple gunshot wounds on 12 December 1918. The sister, Margaret Newton enlisted in late 1916 and served in Bombay, India with the Australian Army Nursing Service, returning home in 1919.
