Born in 1923 in Inverell NSW, Ted was the seventh of ten children of Peter George Thelander (b1890 in Yangan, QLD) and Ivy White (b1892 in Stannifer, NSW). Peter (a Farmer) and Ivy married in 1913 in Nambour QLD and settled in the Nambour region - Mt Perry and Palmwoods - where Peter was a Farmer and Fruit Grower. In the ealry 1920s the family moved to Crow's Nest on the Darling Downs in QLD where Peter worked as a Baker, then moved to Wynnum in the mid 1930s. By 1943 the family was living in Brisbane, QLD and Peter was working as a Labourer - he then moved to Currumbin in Southport QLD where he and son Ted were Farmers.

Ted was in Brisbane QLD in September 1942 when he enlisted in the RAN (Able Seaman; Service No:B4055). Ted was given temporary three months leave to assist on the family farm at Currumbin, and was attached to HMAS Cerberus when he Discharged in November 1945.

Returning to the family farm in Currumbin, Ted worked with his father before he and his parents moved to Melbourne, Victoria in 1949. Ted worked as a Chef and Pastry Cook in St Kilda, Melbourne, returning to Coolangatta QLD in the 1960s and from there to Manly, Brisbane - continuing work as a Pastry Cook. Ted died in 1996.
