Daniel John GALLAHER was born approx. 1894 to Michael (died 23.02.1941?) and Bridget GALLAHER (nee GARRAHY) who had married at Norwood on 22.04.1892.
Daniel GALLAHER joined the AIF on 01.04.1916 at the age of 22 years. He was allocated service no. 2336 and assigned to the 48th Battalion. On 06.08.16, the battalion arrived in France. Not long after arriving on the Western Front on 14.08.16, he was wounded (shell shock) requiring hospitalisation in England. He returned to the battalion on 02.02.1917.
GALLAHER was reported missing at the Battle of Bullecourt 11.04.1917. He was confirmed as a POW on 15.04.1917. He was sent to the POW camp at Limburg, Germany. GALLAHER was repatriated to England 18.12.1918. There is no German POW report on his military file which normally gives a date of birth. However, there is a large Red Cross file on line with all the relevant details of his capture and repatriation. There are also 2 photos featuring Pte. GALLAHER as a German POW.
His mother was granted a military pension of 20 shillings a fortnight from 08.07.1917 which was rescinded on his release. His name is commemorated on the Ballarat POW memorial.
