| 6 Jul 1917: | Honoured Military Medal, For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on 1st March, 1917. He directed and controlled the fire of two Lewis Guns which were in the open and exposed to enemy machine gun and shell fire, and inflicted many casualties. On 2nd March, 1917, after a bombing party had been driven down Layton Lane, Corporal Cowcher held a barricade with his Lewis Gun while bombs were being freely exchanged; and ....... For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during operations on 3/4 May 1917 against the Hindenburg Line near Noreuil when in charge of his Company Lewis Guns and when one of his crews was wiped out he saved the gun and assisted 781 Sergeant M.J. McKay's party. When his ammunition ran out he siezed a German machine gun and kept it going until the party now reduced in number was forced to give ground owing to the enemy counter attacking on two sides. | |
