George Milburn Featherston enlisted in the Royal Australian Navy as a Boy First Class during October 1911 when he was still 15 years old. He served in German New Guinea during 1914 and served aboard HMAS Melbourne and Australia.

His two older brothers were both decorated for bravery in France, being awarded a Military Medal each.

4693 Pte. John Featherston M.M. 23rd Battalion AIF was killed in action 2 September 1918, at Mont St. Quentin, France, aged 31.

2165 Lance Sergeant Ralph Featherston M.M. 47th Battalion AIF, was made a prisoner of war by the Germans on 5 April 1918 at Dernancourt, France. He survived and returned to Australia in 1920.

George was discharged from the Navy in March 1919, still just 23 years of age.
