Lance Corporal Robert McGlashan (Service No:VX36429) enlisted in the Army on 17 June 1940 as a Private attached to 12th Infantry Training Depot. Private McGlashan served in the Middle East (1 February 1941 - 24 March 1942) with 17th Infantry Training Battlaion and 2nd/5th Infantry Battalion. Private McGlashan then served in New Guinea (17 October 1942 - 27 February 1944 and 7 November 1944 - 15 September 1945) where he was promoted to Lance Corporal on 25 May 1945. On his return to Australia, Lance Corporal McGlashan was hospitalised with cerebral malaria, and was atatched to 2nd/5th Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 29 November 1945.
Bob was born in Shelbourne, Victoria in 1909, eldest of seven children of Alexander (Alex) McGlashan (b1885 in Lockwood, Victoria) and Agnes Cumming (b1888 in Lockwood, Victoria). Alex was a Farm Hand in 1909 when he and Agnes married in Shelbourne where they lived before moving to Swan Hill and then Kangaroo Flat via Bendigo and later Maldon. Alex worked as a Farm Hand and Farmer.
Bob was a Farm Labourer in 1928 when he enlisted in the Navy (Able Seaman; Service No:19139) and served as an Able Seaman and Petty offier on HMAS Cerberus and Canberra until 1932. Bob returned to Marong via Bendigo where he worked as a Farm Labourer until enlisting in the Army in WWII. Following his Discharge, Bob returned to Bendigo where he settled at Raywood and was Farmer until his death in 1959.
