Seaman Graham Thomas Purtell (Service No:H3060) enlisted in the RAN in Hobart on 18 April 1945 - rated Writer - on board HMAS Cerberus. Seaman Purtlell served on HMAS Melville and Lonsdale, and was atatched to HMAS Huon at Discharge on 2 April 1947.

Graham was born in Bellerive, Tasmania in 1928, second of five children of Thomas (Tom/Frank) Francis Gabriel Purtell (b1899 in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia) and Kathleen Olive Winifred Hannan (b1901 in Brighton, Tasmania). Thomas (a Teacher) and Kathleen (Relieving Postmistress) married in Pontville in 1925, and lived in Hamilton, Bellerive, Campbell Town, Waratah and Latrobe, where they raised their family and Tom was a Teacher and Headmaster. Tom served in the Army in WWII, and following his Discharge, he and Kathleen lived in New Norfolk before settling in Hobart, where Tom was Headmaster at Campbell Street State School when he died in 1956. 

Graham was a Telephonist with the Postmaster Generals Department in 1945 when he enlisted in the RAN. Following his Discharge, Graham lived with his parents in New Norfolk and Hobart, and worked as a Postal Officer and Technician until his death in 1968.
